TruControl™  Customer Testimonials

At Hensley, we love to hear from our customers. We’re small enough to listen and implement many of the suggestions made by our customers, but large enough to get the new products to market and in your hands quickly. Whether you e-mail or call the 1-800 number you see at the top of every page here, you’ll be talking to one a few towing specialists who want to talk to you about your specific needs and who use the products we advertise. Below are a few of the testimonials we’ve received on the TruControl. Over the years, we’ve received thousands of others on all our products. Making and selling a great product has plenty of benefits. Making and selling a great product that impacts people and makes their lives better is a blessing above and beyond the “bottom line.”

I could not believe how well it worked... how satisfied we are...

I purchased your brake controller for 04 2500 dodge ram 2500 and my 25FT Airstream. I could not believe how well it worked. We left on a trip all the way down Baja and did not have to make any adjustments to the controller. Any one who has traveled down there knows those roads are narrow and sometimes steep. When we returned home we sold our Airstream and purchased a 30 ft 5th wheel, a much heavier and longer trailer. I readjusted the controller to the weight of the trailer and went on a 1500 mile trip. The controller was excellent. Did not have to adjust it at all. I can not begin to tell how satisfied we are.

Smoooooth... all of about 15 minutes

We purchased a TruControl in the fall of 2006 when they were first advertised and I can tell you that they are smoooooth in stopping the tow unit. We tow a 32' Mountaineer. I also tow a 20' utility trailer which I put my farm tractor on for custom work. The TruControl brakes that unit like you think it’s not even being towed. We purchased a 2007 250 series crew cab, diesel, allision tranny, with a full 8' box (what a truck) and they did have a plug in the glove box for hook-up to the TruControl. After matching the colors with the manual and the TruControl unit I just plugged it in and presto it was a go, took all of about 15mins.

All I can say is "WOW" ... SMOOTH CONSISTENT BRAKING on 4 trailers

Sorry about taking so long to write this letter, but, being the pessimist I am, and the bad experiences I had with my previous brake controllers, I just had to test it myself to be convinced.

My previous experience with brake controllers left me frustrated and disgusted at the manufactures for building such poor products.

My first brake controller was a pendulum type, which could never be adjusted correctly.  I was either getting my face slammed into the steering wheel when the trailer brakes locked up or stopping the trailer with the van brakes.  There was never a correct setting for either city, highway, or both city and highway use.  Usually it was the screech of the trailer tires sliding that upset me the most.  I finally ended up backing the controller off and using the manual lever to activate the brakes, not very consistent but easier on my rig.

My next brake controller was a hydraulic unit, a big improvement over the pendulum unit, but, the auto dealership threatened to void my warranty on my van because I had to tap into the brake line, and the abs brakes didn’t work correctly, so I took that unit off and bought an “ better “ pendulum unit. Same problem, different brand.

I was nearly ready to hang it up on trailering, when Colin told me to hang on as Hensley Mfg. was working on an all electric unit.

I tested the Hensley Brake Controller on several trailers of different length and type.

The 1st. test was on my 30’ Airstream, weighing over 8000# loaded.

I calibrated the unit and set it at 10, which was a little high, 9  proved to be a good setting.

All I can say is, “ WOW”, I never dreamed a brake controller would work this well, no more sliding tires or getting jerked around, just SMOOTH CONSISTENT BRAKING, on the highway or city driving made no difference, the same setting gave the same results.  No more continually adjusting the power setting and never knowing how the brakes were going to come on.

Everything Hensley said about this brake controller is true, now I can relax and enjoy trailering without the frustration.

The 2nd. test was with a 19’ Airstream Bambi, this trailer has a single axle, weighing about 4500 lbs. and I wanted to see if the controller had to be reset to accommodate the difference.  I didn’t change from the settings for the 30’ unit, and the results were the same, excellent braking and control.

The 3rd. test was an empty 10’, double axle, enclosed trailer.

Again, I never changed the settings, and still had the same results, smooth controlled braking without the frustration.

The 4th. test was the same 10’, double axle, enclosed trailer, only this time it was LOADED. Again, I never changed the settings, and still had the same results, smooth controlled braking.

Summing it up, I quit looking for the “perfect” brake controller, I GOT ONE.

Congratulations to Hensley on this product, it truly performs as Hensley claims, the design makes installation and setup easy, also the voltage readout and trailer detection are excellent features that help make trailering a positive experience.

No lag, no sliding tires, Electric or Hydraulic, I am amazed!

I have pulled trailers all of my life using a myriad of controllers. When I bought a Jordan controller in 2000, I thought that finally, a simple effective brake controller was at hand. A couple of years later, I found the “BrakeSmart” controller from Master Brake Systems and was amazed at what it could do and the different types of braking systems that it could control. I became a dealer for them and sold several at shows and rallies from coast to coast. Master Brake hit some hard times and I quit selling them. I am now using your “Tru-Control” controller and am even more amazed.

I have a Peterbilt 385 truck that I primarily use to pull our 40’ Teton that is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes. One concern that people have is the lag that can occur between truck braking and trailer braking. I am happy to report that this is not an issue for us. When going down a hill, I noticed that I have increased braking. I have also used this truck to pull trailers with regular electric brakes. It works great!. I don’t find myself sliding tires and adjusting gain any more.

Installation is a piece of cake. I can’t imagine a controller being easier to set up and I have installed many. It doesn’t matter if your truck has hydraulic or air brakes, or if your trailer uses electric magnets or hydraulic disc, the “Tru-Control” handles all of these situations with ease and plenty of detail on its display.

If any one has any particular questions about the controller, I would be happy to answer any concerns that they might have.

Sincerely yours,
Steven M. Dobbs

TruControl Power means no accident! Sold on quality!

Having just completed an 800+ mile tow with the TruControl brake controller, I have developed some very strong impressions ... first of all, on our trip from NC to Middlebury we counted over 30 deer killed on the roads ... on the way back we didn't see as many but a near encounter with one on the way back left me with a great respect and appreciation for the TruControl ... specifically, picture us on an interstate highway towing a 38' Designer through the mountains of Va ... it is after dark and we are in the right lane ... the cruise is set on 65 mph ... 75 yards or so in front of us is another vehicle ... in the left lane a minivan has been slowly passing us and has reached a point 25 yards or so in front of us ... suddenly the minivan swerves into our lane in a manner that puts it into a sideways slide ... in a split second I could see the driver of the minivan was trying to avoid hitting a large deer ... in that same split second I stomped down on the truck's brake pedal and began looking toward the right for a place to aim our rig ... to my great surprise and pleasure, the brakes on the truck/camper almost instantly slowed us sufficiently to allow the minivan's driver to correct his vehicle's skid and turn it back into the left lane ... the Designer remained perfectly lined up with the truck and the brakes on both vehicles worked together allowing us to handle the situation ... having towed for over 50,000 miles with a Prodigy, I can honestly say if I had of still been ruining the Prodigy we would have hit the van or I would have had to try and swerve onto the narrow strip of shoulder pavement ... frankly, I doubt I could have pulled her to the right sufficiently to avoid hitting the minivan ... it goes without saying that I am sold on the quality of the TruControl.

I really believe Hensley has a winner in the TruControl and would hate to tow without it.
